CANAAN CENTER FOR ORGANIC RESEARCH & EXTENSION
The Canaan Center for Organic Research and Extension (CORE) is a non-profit national center in Palestine founded to improve sustainable organic farming for the livelihood of Palestinian small scale farmers and their communities. Through research, innovation, training, knowledge sharing and cooperation, CORE aims to promote the organic production of fruits, vegetables and grains in Palestine and to implement sustainable agricultural standards in Palestine’s almond and olive sectors.
ORGANIC TRADITIONS
Located in the rich agricultural region of Jenin, CORE is helping to revive the authentic traditions of organic farming in Palestine while enriching them with modern organic farming knowledge from the regenerative farming movement.
RESEARCH
CORE uses a participatory approach in which Palestinian farmers identify the needs and challenges they face in planting and producing their yields. Farmers are integral to, and have a vested interest in the success of CORE’s research and progress.
The main researchers are the Palestinian farmers themselves, guided by professional researchers and established scholars who are experts in the fields.
CORE PROJECTS
CSA Palestine is a model regenerative farm, known as the Canaan Farm. Farmers benefit from CORE’s education and extension, enabling them to gain a steady income year-round by supplying weekly baskets of nutritious and delicious organic produce to local Palestinian families.
CSA Palestine also aims to develop consumer organic awareness and establish a local organic market in Palestine over the next 5 years.
Pollinator Project supplies beehives for Palestinian farmers. Honeybees are the most efficient and organic method of pollination for almonds. Having beehives between almond trees has proven to improve pollination and increase the almond crop. And, farm families get high nutrition honey!
Regenerative heritage seed bank uses land-race (ancient native seeds) and other regenerative farming practices to revive Palestinian agricultural heritage of sustainable methods Palestinian farmers evolved over thousands of years - boosting field crops and food security.
Farmers who receive land-race seeds benefit directly and by allowing restocking of the seed bank for the next group of farmers.
