Regenerative farming - what is it?
Beyond organic: Regenerative farming goes beyond just organic agriculture. It naturally creates healthy soil which holds water and carbon better and will produce healthy crops at a higher yield. (Other benefits include increased biodiversity, promoting pollinators, reduced runoff and water pollution, and more.)
Sequestering carbon: Retaining moisture in the soil increases its resilience to extended droughts and other effects of climate warming. Retaining carbon in the soil is called carbon sequestration. Plants will absorb and use carbon dioxide (which is released in excess by burning fossil fuels, creating a harmful greenhouse gas effect in the atmosphere which warms the earth). Putting carbon back in the soil helps growing things.
We want to talk about Palestine, where regenerative farming methods are traditional, giving the world a new way to see Palestinians as custodians of these sustainable farming traditions. Palestinian farmers have olive trees over 2,000 years old that continue to produce olives. There is much to learn from them.
